My children love extracurricular sports and are having a difficult time keeping up with the grades necessary while being a productive member of a team.

Yes, balancing outside interests and grades can be difficult. I personally think that having balance in your life is very important, no matter how old you are. For students, all schoolwork and no time to be parts of teams in which you get to become friends with new people etc, is very important too. I think the key is developing a schedule such that you know specific hours that you will study. This way with some structure in mind, you maintain your academics up while also being able to participate in outside interests.
